Hail to the Chief
November 2007 - After many years of planning, designing, promoting and building, the Chief Ladiga Trail is now completed through Cleburne County, Alabama.

That makes the old Chief 33 miles long. Ending in Anniston, it passes through the towns of Weaver, Jacksonville and Piedmont in Calhoun County. It then enters Cleburne County where the trail cuts through hills, passes through the Talladega National Forest, the town of Borden Springs and crosses Terrapin Creek four times. Eight miles of new pavement were added to the trail in 2007.

December 1st Celebration
In honor of Alabama's longest rails-trail conversion being completed through much of Calhoun County and now, as of November, all of Cleburne County, the Chief Ladiga Recreational Trails Board invites all trail supporters to come out and celebrate the progress.

The event with free food and live music will take from 10:00 to 2:00 with a ribbon cutting at noon. It will be held in Cleburne County, along the new section of the trail which passes over Terrapin Creek. Signs from Highway 21 in Piedmont will direct traffic to the site and directions are below.

Also to be celebrated, will be the new connection to the Pinhoti hiking trail. Within the boundary of the Talladega National Forest, the two famous trails now intersect and actually overlap for a short distance. The Pinhoti Trail will be connected to the Benton MacKaye Trail and also the famous Appalachian Trail.

At the event, food will be served and live music will play. Although donations are welcomed, the event is free and completely sponsored by NE Alabama Regional Medical Center. The music will be provided courtesy of Greenbrier Music Shop.

Connecting to Georgia
Much progress was made during 2007 in Cleburne County and that includes the addition of a Coca Cola sponsored Stateline Gateway. Through a collaboration with the Chief Ladiga Trail Committee, the Georgia based PATH Foundation, the Washington DC based Rails to Trails Conservancy, Coke and many local governments, the new Gateway provides trail users with a place to rest, picnic, and celebrate Alabama and Georgia as the first in a nationwide campaign to encourage "good neighbors: connected through pedestrian pathways." An official Stateline Gateway Celebration is being planned for April of 2008. All users, supporters, and enthusiasts are encouraged to learn more, attend and donate.
