Dedication ScrapbookThe Mountain Longleaf National Wildlife Refuge was dedicated on June 30, 2003. The establishment of America's 542nd refuge coincided with the centennial anniversary of the Nation Wildlife Refuge System. A century ago, President Theodore Roosevelt declared Pelican Island, a five-acre island along the east coast of Florida, America's first federal bird reservation. Since that time, the National Wildlife Refuge System has grown to protect nearly 100 million acres of some of this country's finest wildlife habitat.Mountain Longleaf National Wildlife Refuge is another jewel in this network of lands for wildlife. This newest national wildlife refuge will protect the largest and finest remaining example of mountain longleaf pine ecosystem, and the only remaining old-growth mountain longleaf pine forest in the world.
