Talladega Mountains Field School

Talladega Mountains Field School represents the southern corridor area for the JSU Field Schools while Little River Canyon Field School covers the northern end. Check the menu at right for a complete list of programs and opportunities associated with both Field Schools.

Background
Calhoun County, Alabama is blessed to have an abundance of beautiful natural areas. To the east of the county is the Talladega National Forest. Encompassing over 200,000 acres, it is one of the largest national forests in the eastern United States and the home of Dugger Mountain Wilderness Area. To the west is Fort McClellan and our nation's newest National Wildlife Refuge, Mountain Longleaf NWR. Both federally operated areas have enormous potential in terms of habitat conservation, eco-tourism and environmental education. Because of this, JSU's EPIC proposes the establishment of Talladega Mountains Natural Resource Center that would benefit both local and regional populations.

Building Update
JSU Field Schools, in partnership with Talladega National Forest has proposed a Talladega Mountains Natural Resource Center located near I-20. Completion of the new LEED certified Shoal Creek Ranger District office represents the completion of phase one of this project. Funds have been appropriated for phase two and construction should begin shortly. Check back for details.
